The Pharmacy Services and Medication Safety Director provides enterprise strategic direction, clinical oversight, pharmaceutical sourcing expertise, medication safety leadership, and regulatory guidance for all pharmaceutical management across a national network of ambulatory surgery centers, surgical hospitals, and procedural facilities. This leader serves as the organization’s pharmacy subject matter expert and partners across clinical, operational, supply chain, facility management, and program compliance, legal, risk, anesthesia, nursing, medical leadership, physician partner, and facility teams to advance safe, reliable, standardized, and cost-effective medication practices.

The role has enterprise accountability for branded pharmaceutical sourcing, sequestered inventory strategy, generic and biosimilar conversion strategy, facility medication management and safety programs, controlled substance stewardship, pharmacy regulatory compliance, sterile and non-sterile compounding oversight, medication-related quality outcomes, automated dispensing systems, and scalable pharmacy practice standards.

Key Responsibilities

:* Enterprise Pharmacy Strategy & Governance: Lead medication management strategy, governance, and standardization across ASCs, surgical hospitals, and procedural settings. Establish enterprise policies, best practices, audits, and governance structures that promote safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective medication use. * Medication Safety & Quality: Oversee medication safety programs, event reviews, diversion prevention, controlled substance stewardship, and risk mitigation initiatives. Partner with clinical leaders to advance antimicrobial stewardship, perioperative medication safety, opioid management, and medication storage integrity. * Pharmaceutical Sourcing & Supply Chain: Partner with Supply Chain to optimize pharmaceutical contracting, formulary standardization, drug shortage management, supplier performance, inventory strategies, and cost-containment initiatives. Provide clinical leadership for sourcing decisions, contract negotiations, and product conversion strategies. * Drug Shortage & Contract Management: Lead clinical evaluation and mitigation strategies for drug shortages, recalls, and supply disruptions. Analyze utilization, spend, supplier, and contract data to identify savings opportunities and support implementation of sourcing agreements and conversions. * Regulatory Compliance & Controlled Substance Oversight: Provide enterprise oversight for controlled substance management, diversion prevention, DEA readiness, and compliance with CMS, AAAHC, The Joint Commission, USP, state pharmacy board, and other applicable regulatory requirements. * Technology, Data & Performance Improvement: Serve as the enterprise leader for medication-related technologies, EHR workflows, dispensing systems, and clinical decision support. Develop dashboards, metrics, audits, and performance measures to strengthen oversight and accountability. * Stakeholder Engagement & Change Management: Collaborate with Quality, Risk, Compliance, Operations, Supply Chain, Nursing, Anesthesia, Infection Prevention, physician partners, and facility leaders to mitigate risk, improve outcomes, and drive adoption of enterprise pharmacy initiatives. * Pharmacy Operations & Facility Support: Support development and standardization of facility-level pharmacist roles, competencies, and performance expectations. Evaluate pharmacy vendors, outsourced services, medication technologies, and service providers to ensure alignment with enterprise standards and objectives.

Qualifications: Education:* Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required. * Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, quality or related field preferred.

Licensure/Certifications

:* Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in at least one U.S. state required; ability to obtain additional licensure as business needs require. * Ability to obtain additional licensure as business needs require. * Advanced certification or credential such as BCPS, BCACP, CPHQ, CPPS, Lean Six Sigma, or FASHP preferred but not required.

Experience

:* Minimum ten years of progressive pharmacy leadership experience, including at least five years of multi-state, regional, system-level, enterprise, or corporate healthcare leadership. * Experience in ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient procedural care, hospitals, integrated delivery systems, or other complex healthcare environments. * Experience with AAAHC, The Joint Commission, CMS survey readiness, state boards of pharmacy, regulatory response, clinical governance, and sustained compliance monitoring. * Experience leading controlled substance stewardship, diversion prevention activities, medication safety event response, and enterprise risk mitigation efforts. * Experience developing dashboards, audit programs, policy frameworks, education programs, performance improvement initiatives, and practical tools that support reliable medication management. * Experience evaluating and recommending innovative pharmacy support models, including centralized, regional, contracted, virtual, and technician-supported structures that improve quality, compliance, operational efficiency, and cost effectiveness. * Experience with group purchasing organizations, pharmaceutical contracting, supplier negotiations, formulary conversion strategy, automated dispensing cabinets, EHR medication workflows, e-prescribing, clinical decision support, and medication reconciliation workflows preferred.

Skills Required: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:* Demonstrated expertise in medication safety, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, pharmacy operations, controlled substances, sterile and non-sterile compounding expectations, and stakeholder engagement. * Strong ability to translate complex regulatory and clinical requirements into scalable workflows for ambulatory surgery centers and procedural care environments. * Executive presence with excellent written, verbal, presentation, facilitation, and consultation skills. * Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority across a matrixed enterprise environment and to work effectively with executive, clinical, operational, legal, compliance, supply chain, and physician stakeholders. * Strong analytical skills, including data interpretation, risk assessment, trend analysis, prioritization, performance measurement, and use of technology to support oversight. * Commitment to patient safety, high reliability, continuous improvement, accountability, service excellence, and inclusion. * Ability to travel 20% - 30%; national travel may be required for facility assessments, executive and supplier meetings, vendor evaluations, and enterprise implementation activities.
