Director of Platform Engineering
Position Summary
Author Health is on a mission to deliver world-class, technology-enabled patient care experiences. At the center of that mission is our Platform Engineering team who build and manage the infrastructure supporting our clinic’s patient care platform. We are looking for a new Director of Platform Engineering who will develop and execute on a technology strategy that’ll open up new ways of delivering value-based care. This leader’s work will directly impact our organization’s ability to engage and care for more patients, increase the productivity and efficiency of our care teams, and to ensure the consistent security and reliability of our systems through multiples of scale.
The Director of Platform Engineering will be accountable for the performance and value of our current cloud infrastructure (primarily Google Cloud Platform). They’ll oversee our DevOps programming and deliver compliance to best-in-class security frameworks (HITRUST, SOC2). They’ll also be a contributor to the Engineering function, developing new software capabilities in the patient care platform allowing for more subject matter expertise across the team. This role will work closely with the organization’s Product, Engineering, Data and Enterprise Technology teams on ensuring a cohesive system design and a unified technology roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and drive the vision of the infrastructure platform to enable goals for patient care and company operations
- Develop and execute a strategy for architectural scale that delivers high-availability and cost efficiency
- Regularly writes, reviews, and ships production-quality code alongside the engineering team; balances platform leadership responsibilities with contribution to new care platform capabilities
- Develop and execute AI & automation capabilities for the Platform Engineering function that increase business performance
- Ensure developer efficiency and satisfaction is an outcome of the platform’s design
- Implement platform capabilities to support BCP/DR policies and procedures
- Ensure security is at the center of the platform’s strategy and operations and meets industry standards; this includes supporting various security assessments
- Actively transfers infrastructure and platform subject-matter expertise to engineering team members through pairing, code review, and hands-on knowledge-sharing — building broader team fluency in GCP architecture and platform components
- Manage and develop a small, yet high performing team where team members are consistently adding to their abilities and delivering incremental impact
Competencies
* Proven ability to design build technical roadmaps that align to company mission and scalable architecture goals * Comfort working across the stack; designing and implementing software components that extend platform capabilities * Demonstrated proficiency across multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, or similar), with the ability to select the right tool for a given problem and quickly ramp up on languages or frameworks outside their primary expertise. * Proven ability to develop AI solutions and capabilities (i.e. LLM-based APIs, intelligent automation, or model-serving infrastructure) that produce real business outcomes * Experience implementing security capabilities and practices at all levels of software infrastructure (SDLC processes, AI security, data security and retention, etc) * Proven ability to implement HIPAA compliant technologies and work within regulatory standards like HITRUST and/or SOC2 * Experience managing GCP components like Cloud Run, Cloud Armor, Cloud SQL/Postgres, as well as IaC systems like Terraform * Experience managing & scaling database infrastructure in production, such as Postgres, MySQL, etc, as well as code repositories like Github * Proven ability to develop a team that delivers operational excellence, strategic practicability, and measurable results

Position type and expected hours of work
Can be full time or part time, a minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday
