Director of Digital Fundraising & Advocacy

Remote, US$100,000-$125,000Posted 1 day ago

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Director of Digital Fundraising and Advocacy to develop integrated digital campaigns that inspire people to take action, support our mission, and become long-term donors and advocates across two closely aligned national nonprofit organizations. This is a hands-on strategic role for someone who understands that effective digital fundraising depends on what we say, to whom we say it, when we say it, and what happens next.

The Director will shape campaign strategy, themes, offers, and message architecture; write persuasive email, petition, donation-page, and other conversion-focused copy; and build coordinated supporter journeys from initial engagement through advocacy, giving, retention, and monthly sustainer conversion. Success will be measured by digital revenue, donor and sustainer acquisition, advocacy actions, conversion rates, email engagement and deliverability, list growth and quality, retention, reactivation, and long-term supporter value.

The position reports to the Senior Director of Communications and works closely with fundraising, advocacy, web, social media, and digital production colleagues.

DUTIES

1. Digital Campaign Strategy & Copywriting

  • Develop quarterly and campaign-specific digital fundraising and advocacy strategies, including concepts, themes, offers, audiences, goals, and message architecture.
  • Write persuasive fundraising appeals, action alerts, stewardship communications, reactivation campaigns, sustainer appeals, and other donor communications.
  • Create conversion-focused copy for petitions, donation pages, advocacy pages, subject lines, preview text, calls to action, and related digital assets.
  • Translate complex policy, campaign, and animal-welfare issues into clear, accurate, audience-centered communications.
  • Establish measurable objectives for each campaign, including revenue, donor and sustainer acquisition, advocacy actions, conversion, engagement, and retention.

2. Audience Strategy, Segmentation & Supporter Journeys

  • Develop audience strategies that determine who should receive each message, offer, and follow-up. This includes translating audience strategy into clear, build-ready segments based on donor status, behavior, interests, engagement, acquisition source, and campaign history and tailoring messaging and offers for distinct donor and supporter audiences and for the different roles of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.
  • Design, refine, and optimize welcome, donor, sustainer, reactivation, and petition-conversion journeys to improve first-time donor and advocacy conversion, monthly sustainer acquisition, retention, and upgrade rates, and supporter reactivation, repeat engagement, and long-term value.
  • Build coherent email series and follow-up sequences that connect individual messages into sustained supporter narratives.

3. Cross-Channel Messaging & Campaign Integration

  • Coordinate messaging, timing, and calls to action across email, web, SMS, social media, fundraising, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Create campaign briefs and messaging frameworks that keep audiences, channels, and internal teams aligned from launch through follow-up.
  • Partner with fundraising, advocacy, communications, web, and social media colleagues to ensure that campaign creative and execution reinforce organizational priorities.

4. Measurement, Testing & Optimization

  • Set benchmarks and monitor campaign performance, including revenue, revenue per recipient, conversion, donor and sustainer acquisition, advocacy actions, engagement, deliverability, retention, and list quality.
  • Develop and apply A/B and other testing strategies for subject lines, creative, audiences, offers, calls to action, timing, sequencing, and landing pages.
  • Produce regular performance reports that explain results, identify practical opportunities, and turn learning into measurable program improvements.

5. Program Management & Quality Assurance

  • Manage campaign calendars, briefs, reviews, deadlines, and handoffs so multiple digital initiatives move from strategy to launch efficiently.
  • Review and quality-check copy, links, audiences, forms, donation pages, and final campaign assets before deployment, while maintaining brand, accessibility, and compliance standards.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in digital fundraising, digital advocacy, direct-response fundraising, nonprofit communications, or a closely related field.
  • A demonstrated record of developing digital campaigns that produced measurable fundraising, conversion, acquisition, retention, or advocacy results.
  • Exceptional persuasive writing and editing skills, with the judgment to adapt voice, framing, detail, and urgency for different audiences and objectives.
  • Strong understanding of audience segmentation, donor behavior, supporter journeys, testing, conversion optimization, and cross-channel campaign strategy.
  • Experience with an email marketing, advocacy, or CRM platform; EveryAction/Bonterra or comparable platform experience is especially valuable.
  • Comfort interpreting campaign data, establishing benchmarks, and using results to improve strategy and execution.
  • Ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines while collaborating effectively across fundraising, advocacy, communications, web, and social media teams.
  • A strategic mindset combined with a willingness to personally write, edit, test, troubleshoot, and improve the work.
  • A specific college degree is not required; demonstrated performance and relevant experience are more important.
  • Familiarity with animal welfare, environmental, or social-justice advocacy is valued.
