The United Artists of Animation and Interactive Media

Community Director (Pro-Bono)

Remote, USPosted 1 day ago

Job Description

Department: Community

Reports To: Founder/CEO (Close partnership with Media Director)

Location: Fully Remote

Commitment: Significant volunteer leadership role (estimated 10-15 hrs/week)

Organization Overview

The United Artists of Animation and Interactive Media (U-AAIM) is a global non-profit built by industry veterans and passionate advocates for a brighter future in entertainment! We believe sustainable creative careers should be the foundation of our global industry, not the exception.

Our mission is to forge an equitable, transnational ecosystem where artists and staff can achieve lifelong financial stability—from their first break, through the peaks and valleys of their career, and into a secure retirement. We drive systemic change across borders by uniting the global workforce with two core tools: actionable industry intelligence to empower collective advocacy, and practical, career-spanning education for professional resilience and growth.

We are more than a resource; we are a mobilizing force—using transparency as a weapon against exploitation, education as a pathway to economic power, and collective action as the mechanism to reshape an entire industry. We exist to empower creators to own their careers, their value, and their future.

Position Summary

We are seeking a warm, systems-minded Community Director to build the heart of our organization: the internal spaces where our students, volunteers, and alumni connect, support each other, and grow. This role is focused inward, on fostering a profound sense of belonging, facilitating peer-to-peer learning, and ensuring every member feels valued and heard. You will build and nurture the digital “home base” and create the programs that turn a group of individuals into a true, supportive community. You are the cultivator of our culture and the champion of our members.

Key Responsibilities

Community Ecosystem Building (50%)

Design, build, and moderate our community platforms as welcoming, useful, and safe spaces for students, volunteers, professionals, and alumni.

Develop and facilitate community programs: weekly check-ins, portfolio feedback circles, “ask-me-anything” sessions with volunteers, and casual networking events.

Establish community norms, values, and moderation practices that foster inclusivity, respect, and mutual support.

Onboard new members and help them integrate into the community.

Member Engagement & Support (30%)

Act as the chief listener, proactively checking in on community morale, identifying needs, and spotting potential conflicts or concerns.

Recruit and guide volunteer community moderators or “ambassadors” from within the member base.

Create channels and opportunities for peer mentorship and connection, reducing the transactional feel of a traditional “program.”

Collaborate with the Media Director to identify powerful member stories and experiences that should be amplified externally.

Feedback & Insight Synthesis (20%)

Create lightweight, ongoing channels for community feedback on programs, events, and overall experience.

Synthesize qualitative insights and community sentiment into clear reports for the leadership team to inform program improvements and strategic decisions.

Track key health metrics of the community (active participation, retention, sentiment).

Who You Are (Qualifications & Mindset)

Essential

2+ years of experience in community management, facilitation, or building engaged online groups. Experience skillfully navigating diverse perspectives and backgrounds, coaching, or volunteer coordination is highly relevant.

A natural connector and empath who thrives on helping people find common ground and build relationships. You are a facilitator, not a broadcaster.

Systems-oriented and proactive. You don’t just manage conversations; you design spaces, rituals, and programs that encourage positive interaction.

Excellent interpersonal and conflict navigation skills, with high emotional intelligence.

Deeply familiar with the culture and tools of online communities (Discord, forums, etc.).

Passionately believes that a supportive community is the foundation of success, especially for individuals breaking into competitive fields.

Highly Valued

Direct experience building communities within the animation, gaming, or other creative fandoms.

Lived or professional understanding of the systemic barriers facing underrepresented groups in tech and creative fields.

Experience with Discord administration, including bots, roles, and channel architecture for large, engaged servers.

Fluency in the unique social dynamics and support needs of students, professionals, and volunteer networks.

What We Offer

Build the Heart of the Organization: The unique opportunity to design and cultivate the central home for our students, volunteers, professionals, and alumni, directly shaping their experience and sense of belonging.

Deep, Meaningful Connections: Forge genuine relationships with the next generation of artists and the industry professionals guiding them, becoming a cornerstone of their support network.

Systems-Building in Action: Design and implement the community programs, norms, and digital infrastructure that will allow this supportive culture to thrive and scale.

Direct Feedback Loop: See the immediate impact of your work on member retention, satisfaction, and peer-to-peer collaboration.

A Foundational Culture Role: Play a critical part in establishing the inclusive, supportive, and collaborative DNA of our organization for years to come.

Future Potential: While currently volunteer-based, this is a foundational role with the potential to transition into a compensated position as the organization secures sustainable funding.
